Process:

From salvaged trees:

Rough cut to size then mount on a lathe and turn to the basic shape (leaving extra material since the wood may distort while drying). Dry for 6 months to 2 years, then mount and finish turn to final dimensions.

From dried lumber:

Rough cut to round using a saw, then mount and turn to final shape.

In either case, the lathe turns the wood, but the turning is accomplished by manually presenting the cutting tools and guiding, by hand, to the desired shape.

Embellishment may include laminating contrasting woods and/or burning decorative patterns into the rim. Burning is done with a laser based on artwork composed on a computer.
