Damien Namkung - South Palace Studio
I largely use salvaged Douglas Fir that I mill. I shape the wood then I burn it, afterwards I use a series of brushes to remove the char. Removing the char brings out the texture and exposes the dramatic fire hardened grain. This allows me to apply an acrylic color wash to dye the wood. To finish the process I apply multiple layers of clear coat. I use aluminum spacers and hardwoods on my wall pieces. I developed this technique on my own. It is loosely based off of the traditional Japanese wood preservation technique known as Yaki Sugi.
