Karen Chang Art

My work is created using a layered mixed media approach on canvas. I begin by developing the composition digitally, then transfer it to canvas where I build up texture using acrylic paint, ink, spray paint, pastel, and collage. These materials allow for expressive mark-making and visual complexity. Once the underpainting is complete, I transition to oil paint for the final layers, using glazing, blending, and palette knife techniques to refine figures and surface details. This method allows realistic forms to emerge from abstract foundations, creating a dynamic interplay between control and spontaneity. The result is a richly layered surface that reflects both material depth and emotional resonance.
