I use the sound of color and shape to paint vivid landscapes and flowers in oil. I know that sounds poetic and vague, but I mean it literally. I have a form of synesthesia (mixed senses) that means I hear everything that I see. When I look at a painting, I hear a complex, layered wall of sound that encompasses all aspects of the work: its curves, shapes, proportions and colors all blended together into one complex harmony. It is this overall harmony of a piece that guides my composition as I endeavor to fit each aspect of a work within this harmonic structure. I focus primarily on Northwest landscapes and flowers because the complex fractal patterns present in living things and natural landscapes create delicate interlaced harmonies the beauty of which man-made objects very rarely equal. I try to convey these harmonies in visual form with thick textural brush strokes that give the painting life as light and shadow changes them throughout the day.
