I begin with textural mediums on primed canvas or board, then add layers of random acrylic paint colors, with drips and splatters to bring interest to the underpainting. Next, I sketch in a concept with a paintbrush if there will be tangible things in the painting. Then I build more layers of acrylic color, sometimes adding more texture and thick paint, or creating interest with glazes, splatters, scratches and drips throughout the picture. It is a spontaneous way of painting; often controlled and calculated, but also allowing the paint to do what it wants. I make calculated choices of what to keep and cover up until achieving the final effect and the painting feels complete.
