Damien Namkung - South Palace Studio
The process I have developed for creating my work is based on a ancient Japanese building technique known as Yaki Sugi or Shou Sugi Ban. Traditionally with Yaki Sugi, the wood is burnt and some amount of char is removed. This is done in order to increase its longevity. The process also brings out the grain and reveals a unique pattern in the wood. This is the part I found so compelling and inspiring. First, I shape the wood; then burn it. After charring, I use a series of brushes to bring out the grain. To finish each piece, I color wash and seal them. I create soap dishes, trays, center pieces; as well as, wall hangings shelves and sculptures.
